Rusal intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at plants by 15% by 2025 - Rusal GD
World's second largest aluminum company Rusal plans to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions at plants by 15% by 2025, the company General Director Yevgeny Nikitin said in a speech at the Russian pavilion operating on the sidelines of the United Nations World Conference on Climate Change on Tuesday.
As Nikitin recalled, in 2007, Rusal had a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50%. "In 2014, we achieved this goal and even exceeded it, reducing emissions by 53%," he said. "In 2017, we developed a new emission strategy, which implies achieving by 2025 a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in aluminum plants by 15%," Nikitin said.
"Today, Rusal has several projects that give us the opportunity to look to the future with confidence," he said, calling among them inert anode technology, which completely eliminates greenhouse gas emissions and resinous substances, technology for reducing perfluorocarbons, dust and fluoride. , technology of capturing and applying waste heat from the off-gas of electrolyzes. Rusal is actively working on these projects.
According to Nikitin, Rusal also plans to reduce CO2 emissions to 2.7 tonnes per 1 ton of aluminum, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from alumina refineries by 10% and reduce energy consumption by 7%, purchasing at least 95% of electricity for aluminum plants from hydropower plants and using other sources of carbon-free generation.
Another goal of Rusal is to "support Russian and international initiatives and alliances that advocate proactive actions against climate change and in support of carbon prices consistent with the company's strategic goals."
