VOLKHOV ALUMINIUM SMELTER (VAZ)
The Volkhov Aluminium
Smelter first produced industrial aluminium in 1932. The smelter's main product
is primary aluminium.
Production capacity of the smelter is 24,000 tonnes of saleable aluminium per annum.
The energy for the smelter is supplied by the Volkhov Hydropower Plant, which
forms part of the Lenenergo system, the largest regional energy supplier in
Russia's northwest.

The Volkhov Aluminium Smelter is
located in Volkhov, a small town in the St.Petersburg Region of Russia. Its
population is 50,000 people. Volkhov has a large railway junction serving as a
crossroads to all points of the Russian Railway network, and mooring and cargo
handling facilities on the Volkhov River that provide access to the Saint
Petersburg and Murmansk sea ports. In addition to the smelter, the town hosts a
hydropower plant and chemical and cement enterprises.

Process technology
In September 1999, the smelter completed modernisation of its reduction area.
The smelter is equipped with cutting-edge pre-bake pots designed by the Russian
National Aluminium & Magnesium Institute, or VAMI.
Certificates
The Volkhov Aluminium Smelter has been certified for compliance with the
international standards of quality management system ISO 9001 and of the
environmental management system ISO 14001:2004.
Development and Environment
The smelter’s key areas for improvement by 2010 are as follows:

Construction of dry gas scrubbers for the plant’s electrolysis area, to reduce
harmful emissions and to improve the regional environment.

Modernisation of the smelter’s Automated Process Control System.
