WHAT WE
DO / OUR OPERATIONS / ALUMINIUM DIVISION / POWDER METALLURGY
POWDER METALLURGY
The ‘Powder Metallurgy’ facility
is a modern Russian producer of powders, pigment and pyrotechnic aluminium dust.
Its total annual production volume is 19,000 metric tonnes, accounting for market
share of 65% domestically and 5% of the global market.
The facility supplies 48% of products to customers in the domestic market, and 52%
are exported.
Powder Metallurgy Ltd. was established in 1998 when the powder metallurgy operation
was established as a separate division from the Irkutsk aluminium smelter. The facility
began operations in 1976 when the powder metallurgy shop was constructed by the
Russian National Aluminium and Magnesium Institute (VAMI), which is located in St.
Petersburg.
The production facility is located in the industrial zone of Shelekhov, 20 kilometres
from Irkutsk, near large transportation hubs. The ‘Powder metallurgy’ production
facility has branches in Krasnoturyinsk (Sverdlovsk Region) and in Volgograd. Total
headcount is 700 people.

Technology
‘Powder metallurgy’ has been producing aluminium powders, pigment and pyrotechnic
aluminium dust of various chemical compositions and granular sizes for 30 years.
Technological processes are constantly modernised, thus it is possible to adjust
granular sizes and chemical composition according to customer demand.
‘Powder metallurgy’ and its branches use classical technology to produce aluminium
powder by pulverising liquid aluminium with heated nitrogen and dividing it in different
fractions using vibration screens and rotary centrifugal classifiers.
Dry milling allows aluminium dust to be produced in pneumatic separation mills.
Certificates
The production facility has an integrated quality and environment management system
which complies with ISO 9001:2000 and 14001:2004 international standards. The facility
is regularly audited by National Quality Assurance (Great Britain) to ensure.
All packages are certified in compliance with national and international requirements
for transportation of hazardous goods.
Environment
The environment management system complies with all the international standards.
The facility’s operations haven’t been fined or sanctioned by the environmental
protection authorities.
