RUSAL’s team is one of the best qualified and professionally trained in Russia and abroad. To maintain and reinforce this advantage, the company places a strong focus on developing and training
the staff at all levels of management. RUSAL employs a mentorship approach, with the company’s
leaders helping their subordinates to progress professionally, providing guidance and encouraging
them to grow and set ambitious targets.
RUSAL’s major educational and development projects:
In 2010, RUSAL began the development and introduction of professional standards. All
measurable parameters across management and operations are being brought together to set specific
requirements for all kinds of professional activities. The corporate standards include the following
criteria:
-
Performance quality and effectiveness;
-
§ Level of professional qualification;
-
Education (higher, special) which is necessary for the job;
-
Adherence to the company’s corporate ethics, labour and environmental safety requirements.
RUSAL’s employees are regularly tested on compliance with professional standards. Depending
on the tests results, they might be advised to take specialised training courses to raise the level of
professional qualification. This programme allows for an efficient planning of the staff development
programmes, based on the qualification requirements for each job category.
RUSAL is Russia’s first industrial company to adopt modular training programmes. The modular
training system has a number of significant advantages:
-
Individual approach to staff training and development in accordance with employees’
personal needs and abilities;
-
An ability to focus on specific work areas that need improvement;
-
Educational programmes’ flexibility that allows to assess intermediate results, introduce new
courses and go back to the modules that might need revising.
RUSAL currently offers 35 modular programmes of professional training.
To ensure the availability of corporate educational programmes to all of the company’s employees
spread across Russia and 18 countries abroad, RUSAL is introducing a system of distance learning,
which is a unified educational base that can be accessed by any member of the staff. The distance
learning system enables RUSAL employees to take relevant courses without any disruption to their
work schedules.
RUSAL’s system of distance learning offers a variety of educational courses that are developed to
meet the qualification requirements for all jobs across the company. The courses are developed by
RUSAL in partnership with the best professionals and authors of teaching methodologies. RUSAL’s
system of distance learning currently includes over 200 courses for production and managerial
staff as well as for students who major in subjects related to RUSAL’s operations. Apart from
educational courses, the system offers surveys that help to assess the efficiency and viability of the
educational programmes. In 2010, RUSAL’s system of distance learning was used by more than
45,000 people.
To spark employees’ motivation for effective performance and professional growth, the company
runs an annual competition “RUSAL’s Professionals”. The competition is open to both production
and managerial staff. The contest's participants are RUSAL's best employees from Russia, Armenia,
Ukraine, Guinea and China.
Under the terms of the competition, the participants should demonstrate compliance with labour
and environmental safety requirements. The contest evaluates both the knowledge of theory and an
ability to apply it in practice.
The contest also includes a nomination “Head of Improvement Project”, which is open for authors
and heads of projects, aimed at introducing new ideas or enhancing existing business processes. The
major criteria for assessing the project are:
-
Compliance with the company's strategic goals;
-
Efficiency of the project;
-
Originality of the idea;
-
Quality of the project design.
The winners are awarded with cash bonuses, gifts and a title “Professional of RUSAL”.
