BOGOSLOVSK ALUMINIUM SMELTER (BAZ)

The Bogoslovsk Aluminium Smelter is an alumina and aluminium complex. It is the third largest alumina producer in the CIS. The complex produced its first alumina in 1944 and in 1945 first aluminium was produced.

Its main products are primary aluminium, alumina, anode paste, aluminium alloys, underseals. The Bogoslovsk complex incorporates its own railway stations.

The smelter's annual capacity is 187 thousand tonnes of saleable aluminium and 1,100 thousand tonnes of alumina. The smelter employs 3,702 people.

Krasnoturyinsk (named Turyinskiye Rudniki until 1944) is a town in the Sverdlovsk region in Russia, located on the Turya river, 370 km north of Yekaterinburg. It has a population of 64,600 people. Its main production facilities are an aluminium smelter, iron ore and gold extraction mines.

Technology

The potrooms of the Bogoslovsk Aluminium Smelter are equipped with Horizontal Stud Soederberg pots of average capacity (the amperage is 75-90 kA).

The refinery runs a mixed parallel Bayer(80%)/sinter (20%) process.

Certificates

The Bogoslovsk Aluminium Smelter has been certified for compliance with the international standards of quality management system ISO 9001, of the environmental management system (ISO 14001:2004) and health and safety management system (OHSAS 18001).

Development

An investment programme is currently underway at the smelter and includes an expansion project at the second red mud disposal area.

Environment

In 2005, two potrooms were equipped with advanced gas scrubbers. A new industrial waste storage was commissioned in 2008.
