In 2010 North America accounted for 13% of global aluminium consumption.
The key consumers of aluminium in North America are transportation, construction and packaging
industries. Much of the continent’s demand comes from the auto industry, which is seeing a steady
growth, underpinned by strong domestic consumption. The US ranks first globally for the ownership
of passenger cars per capita.
The US, which places a strong focus on reducing the carbon footprint, is a global leader in using
aluminium for automobiles production. Due to its inherent lightness, aluminium reduces the weight
of a vehicle, boosting its energy efficiency and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
A 10% reduction in the weight of a car prompts an 8% surge in its energy efficiency. Every 100 kg
of aluminium save up to 1,000 litres of petrol per 200 thousand kilometers.
The content of aluminium in the US cars has grown from 3% in 1977 to 8.6% in 2009.
