Sustainable development
In 2009 RUSAL completed a large-scale project to modernise the Krasnoyarsk smelter. The renovation resulted in in its production efficiency increasing considerably and a reduction in its emissions. find out more

Bratsk Aluminium Smelter

The Bratsk smelter, one of the largest in the world, became the first aluminium producing facility globally to reach a capacity of one million tonnes. It takes only 4 days to deliver the smelter’s products to China which is the world’s largest and fastest growing aluminium market.

In 2013, the Bratsk smelter produced 1,001,918.2 tonnes of primary aluminium, a 1% increase year-on-year. Key efficiency indicators also improved: current efficiency went up by 0.4% to 88.48%; average daily pot output increased by 0.97% to 1184.73 kg; while specific electricity consumption went down by 0.93% to 15,934 KW*h/t.

Labour productivity in 2013 was raised 1.1% year-on-year, through lower labour costs and higher output, to 248.1 tonnes per person. The achievement meant that workers’ earnings were increased to the average level of 47,400 roubles per month.

In 2013, the smelter continued its environmental modernisation programme. As one of the project activities, the design of four highly efficient gas treatment plants was completed; equipment is already being delivered to the site, and one plant is being assembled. Also, a pilot area was commissioned, which has 23 pots equipped with automatic feeders of raw materials. As part of the same programme, reconstruction of waste disposal areas and landscaping of the smelter’s sanitary protection zone were continued. The production waste processing area was upgraded, and the industrial laboratory was given new environmental monitoring instruments. Total environmental investments in 2013 exceeded 700 mln roubles.
